Christmas on the Square is a lovely reason to slow down in Salisbury. The festive pop-up gathers around Guildhall Square, with ten retail chalets, street food and a bar making an inviting stop in the heart of the city. Browse the chalets, explore the shops and leave time for the Cathedral Close. The pop-up also featured in the council’s 2025 programme; its intimate scale is part of the appeal.
Take a thoughtful look at the gifts, then pause over hot food or drink. The city council’s programme includes live music and entertainment on selected days, so check the current event listing if you would like to plan around a performance. General admission is free; Santa’s Grotto is a separate paid experience with advance booking recommended for your preferred slot. Choose a festive Sunday if you would like more browsing.
The council has confirmed Sunday Festive Markets in Market Place on 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December, bringing additional traders and seasonal treats into the centre. They are separate market days, rather than a promise that every trader will be present throughout the Christmas pop-up. That makes a Sunday visit an especially appealing way to combine a gift hunt with lunch and a little city exploring.
Keep the different closing dates in mind when choosing your trip. Retail chalets finish on Christmas Eve; the bar and food continue later in December, with Christmas Day and Boxing Day closed. Before Christmas, an afternoon browse followed by an early evening drink gives you the best of both daylight and festive lights. For a longer break, stay nearby and make room for the cathedral, independent shops and an unhurried meal.
The city’s Christmas programme is wider than the square itself, so there is no need to rush straight home.
