You want two market squares with different programmes.
You want one organiser and one access answer for both venues.
Choose one square per visit and use an evening for the Basilica setting.
Ask each organiser about that market’s route and facilities rather than transferring information between them.
Make Szent István tér your first market stop. Advent Bazilika’s own site confirms 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, with the square in front of St Stephen’s Basilica as its setting. A tree, lights and Hungarian artisans give you plenty to look at before you choose a snack. The main market hours run into the evening, but Christmas and New Year have separate arrangements, so check the calendar for your particular visit.
Vörösmarty tér gives the weekend a second market rather than a reason to hurry the first. Its organiser also announces an opening on 13 November 2026, with its own programme and timetable. Keep the two events distinct when planning: a craft stall, children’s activity or food counter may finish before another part of the square. Read the current organiser pages before assuming that everything continues into January.
At the Basilica, the exhibitor directory gives you a useful starting point for small gifts. You can browse ceramics, felt accessories, glass jewellery and wooden pieces, then ask the people at the stall about their work. Food deserves the same care. Named exhibitors include chimney cakes, gingerbread, chocolate and festive baking; choose from the actual menu, ask about ingredients and check the portion and price in Hungarian forint before ordering.
Leave daylight for a gentle look at Pest, followed by an indoor break before returning to the lights. This is a suggested rhythm, not a promise of a particular show or weather. On day two, explore the other square and keep your final hours loose enough for a last purchase and a comfortable airport transfer. A hotel near the Basilica makes repeat visits easy without turning the whole weekend into a continuous outdoor circuit.

Travelling on a full British citizen passport? For these Schengen trips, check that it was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after you leave. Tourist visits across the Schengen area count towards a combined 90 days in any 180-day period.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is in use. First registration can involve a photograph and fingerprints, so leave extra time at the border. There is no advance EES application or charge; for Eurostar from London, border checks take place before departure.
For a December 2026 trip, recheck ETIAS before you travel. At our 24 October 2026 check, official guidance had not announced a confirmed launch date and said no application was needed yet. A future requirement cannot be settled by your market booking date.

Take suitable travel insurance for the whole trip and a valid UK GHIC or eligible EHIC. The card covers medically necessary state healthcare on the same terms as local residents; it does not replace insurance or cover private treatment and getting you home.

Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), rather than the euro. Read menus and card-terminal amounts in forint and check card acceptance before ordering. Ask about any reusable-mug deposit. December is CET, one hour ahead of the UK. Bring a European round two-pin adaptor, warm layers and footwear with grip, and check the forecast for your dates.
Search the airline’s own dated booking calendar for Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport; easyJet publishes London–Budapest flights. Add the airport-to-city connection to your flight rather than comparing flight time alone. BKK’s 100E Airport Express runs to Deák Ferenc tér with a special ticket.
Editorial whole-journey allowance: around 7–9 hours from a London home to a central Pest hotel: about an hour to the airport, two hours before departure, roughly two and a half hours flying, then arrivals, the bus and the final walk. Replace these planning assumptions with your actual flights and access needs.

BKK’s 100E Airport Express links Budapest Airport with Deák Ferenc tér, with an operator journey-time guide of about 40 minutes. It needs its own airport ticket. Use BudapestGO for a dated trip and check the accessible route option, vehicle and stops.
These are suggested ways to pace your visit, with time for an indoor rest and a return after dark. Check the official dated programme for actual events.
Give the surrounding streets a daylight visit, then choose an indoor pause before the market lights. Museums, churches and other attractions have their own tickets, hours and access arrangements.
Plan Advent Bazilika on Szent István tér and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas as two separate visits. They have different organisers, layouts and opening arrangements. Ask each organiser which entrance and street approach currently work best for your wheelchair or mobility aid. The Basilica steps are not a route description for the market square; a visit inside the church is a separate decision with its own access information. Avoid committing to an untested shortcut merely because a mapping app shows a short distance.
