How we choose and check our guides

The market

Cologne is a lovely choice when you want a Christmas break that feels festive from the first few steps. The Cathedral market fills Roncalliplatz beside the city’s great landmark, with a decorated tree and a canopy of lights drawing you towards the stalls. Begin with a daylight circuit so you can see the craftsmanship properly, then come back after an indoor break for the evening glow. There is no need to make every purchase on the first lap: choose a meeting point, compare the gift stalls and let lunch happen when something catches your eye.

This market is particularly rewarding if you enjoy seeing how things are made. Look for glassblowing, hand-painted glass baubles and airbrush artists at work, alongside wood, ceramics, jewellery and upcycled gifts. Take a little time to watch rather than simply walking past. Food is equally varied: potato pancakes with apple sauce sit alongside flatbreads, sweet baking and international options, including vegan dishes. A small snack followed by a later meal makes more sense here than trying to settle every craving at once.

Cologne’s wider Christmas-market tradition began in 1820; today its different squares each have their own character. Make the Cathedral market your first chapter, then leave room for the old town’s Heinzels Wintermärchen at Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Their season runs to different dates, so check the individual venue before planning a second evening. One important 2026 detail: the Cathedral market is closed on Sunday 22 November. On an open day, the nearby main station makes it wonderfully easy to finish with one last look at the lights before heading home.

What a Brit needs to know

Travelling on a full British citizen passport? For these Schengen trips, check that it was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after you leave. Tourist visits across the Schengen area count towards a combined 90 days in any 180-day period.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is in use. First registration can involve a photograph and fingerprints, so leave extra time at the border. There is no advance EES application or charge; for Eurostar from London, border checks take place before departure.

For a December 2026 trip, recheck ETIAS before you travel. At our 24 October 2026 check, official guidance had not announced a confirmed launch date and said no application was needed yet. A future requirement cannot be settled by your market booking date.

GOV.UK passport and Schengen rules · Official EES guidance · Official ETIAS updates

Take suitable travel insurance for the whole trip and a valid UK GHIC or eligible EHIC. The card covers medically necessary state healthcare on the same terms as local residents; it does not replace insurance or cover private treatment and getting you home.

NHS healthcare cover and insurance guidance

Money: euros. The German National Tourist Board notes cash remains popular; individual market-stall card acceptance still needs checking.

Clock and plugs: one hour ahead of the UK during the market season. Germany uses Type C/F sockets and 230V; bring a suitable European adaptor.

Pack for lingering: DWD’s 1991–2020 average December temperature at Köln/Bonn weather station is 3.8°C. These are long-term station averages, not a forecast or a promise of snow. Wear layers, weatherproof footwear and gloves, and plan somewhere warm to sit.

Getting there from the UK

By rail: Köln Hauptbahnhof puts you beside the Cathedral. From London, take Eurostar to Brussels Midi/Zuid, then an ICE or Eurostar service to Cologne. SNCB International quotes around 5 hours 11 minutes for a connecting journey; allow a comfortable connection and check your actual date.

By air: Cologne Bonn Airport confirms London Stansted with Ryanair, with an indicative flight time of about 1 hour 25 minutes. This is route confirmation, not a promise that every market date has a flight. Choose your actual travel dates before booking a hotel.

In town: Public transport to Dom/Hauptbahnhof is the simplest approach. The walk links below are map-route estimates; crowds, stops and security arrangements can add time.

Airport transfer: Cologne Bonn Airport confirms its railway station beside both terminals and round-the-clock S-Bahn and regional connections. Use the VRS planner for the actual train to Köln Hauptbahnhof; a fixed 2026 airport-to-centre journey time was not confirmed in the airport’s own guide.

Whole-journey planning estimate: allow roughly 7–8 hours from a central London starting point to a central Cologne hotel by rail. This is an editorial allowance: about 30 minutes to St Pancras, 60–90 minutes for station formalities, the quoted 5h11 connecting journey and 15–30 minutes at the Cologne end. It excludes disruption and is not a timetable promise.

More UK starting points: the airport’s current destination list also includes Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Manchester and Newcastle. These are published route options, not confirmation of service on every Christmas-market date. Heathrow is listed with British Airways, Edinburgh with Eurowings, and Manchester with Ryanair and Jet2.com; select your exact dates before committing.

If you fly: an editorial central-London-to-central-hotel allowance is about 6–7 hours: 60–90 minutes to the UK airport, two hours before departure, the airport’s indicative 1h25 flight, 45–60 minutes for arrival formalities and an allowance of 30–60 minutes for the onward rail connection and final walk. The transfer allowance is a planning assumption, not a confirmed train duration. Check your booked flight and VRS connection.

Practical information

Getting there and back

Arriving by rail: Köln Hauptbahnhof sits beside the Cathedral. Use the Cathedral-side exit and give yourself time to get your bearings before heading to Roncalliplatz.

Getting around: public transport to Dom/Hauptbahnhof is the simplest approach. Link the Cathedral and old-town markets on foot, with a warm indoor break between visits. The hotel walking links are measured map routes; crowds and stops add time.

Coming on a coach tour: from 26 November to 23 December 2026, special arrangements use Koelnmesse car park P22 in Deutz. A free line 199 shuttle connects coach passengers with Heumarkt. Leave a generous return margin, as traffic changes the journey time, and confirm the booked arrangements with your operator.

On the day

Start around the Cathedral, leaving enough time to look up as well as down the rows of stalls. Pick a few gifts before lunch, then warm up indoors. In the afternoon, follow the old-town streets towards Alter Markt and Heumarkt; come back to Roncalliplatz after dark if you would love a second look at its canopy of lights.

Before and after

Check the Cathedral market’s closure on 22 November before booking. Bring euros, a working payment card and a little cash, and ask your chosen stall which payments it accepts. Allow €5 for the refundable mug deposit at the Cathedral market: return the mug to one of its mulled-wine stands or keep it as a souvenir. Other markets may use different mugs and deposits.

Accessibility

For an easier visit, choose a quieter weekday and plan an indoor rest. If you need a particular surface, an accessible WC or a reserved viewing arrangement, contact the market before travelling: a detailed 2026 access and toilet-location plan is still to confirm. Check main-station lift availability separately with the rail operator.
