Hauptmarkt and Rathausplatz, Nuremberg old town

The market

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt rewards a gentle approach. The red-and-white canvas roofs gather around Hauptmarkt and Rathausplatz, making a little city of wood and cloth in the middle of the old town. Walk one complete circuit before deciding where to stop: it is easier to notice a beautifully made decoration when you are not trying to choose lunch at the same time. The opening prologue, spoken by the Christkind from the Frauenkirche balcony, is an especially distinctive part of the tradition; in 2026 it is scheduled for 5.30pm on 27 November.

Look beyond the first row of tempting food and you will find the market’s traditional character in its decorations: gold-foil Rauschgold angels, nativity pieces, wooden toys and the curious little prune figures known as Zwetschgenmännchen. Make room in your bag for something small that will come out every December. For lunch, the local classic is wonderfully uncomplicated: three small Nuremberg bratwursts tucked into a roll. Save the gingerbread decision for later, when you can choose a packet to take home as well as a piece to enjoy now.

The market’s oldest known record dates to 1678, a detail recently clarified by the city’s archivists. That living tradition is part of the pleasure of coming here: familiar crafts, regional baking and an old-town setting that encourages another wander. Build in a warm indoor pause, then return towards evening when the roofs and lights feel at their most inviting. If you want the Sister Cities Market or Original Regional stalls too, visit by 23 December; the main market continues for a shorter final session on Christmas Eve.

What a Brit needs to know

Travelling on a full British citizen passport? For these Schengen trips, check that it was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after you leave. Tourist visits across the Schengen area count towards a combined 90 days in any 180-day period.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is in use. First registration can involve a photograph and fingerprints, so leave extra time at the border. There is no advance EES application or charge; for Eurostar from London, border checks take place before departure.

For a December 2026 trip, recheck ETIAS before you travel. At our 24 October 2026 check, official guidance had not announced a confirmed launch date and said no application was needed yet. A future requirement cannot be settled by your market booking date.

GOV.UK passport and Schengen rules · Official EES guidance · Official ETIAS updates

Take suitable travel insurance for the whole trip and a valid UK GHIC or eligible EHIC. The card covers medically necessary state healthcare on the same terms as local residents; it does not replace insurance or cover private treatment and getting you home.

NHS healthcare cover and insurance guidance

Money: euros. The German National Tourist Board notes cash remains popular; individual market-stall card acceptance still needs checking.

Clock and plugs: one hour ahead of the UK during the market season. Germany uses Type C/F sockets and 230V; bring a suitable European adaptor.

Pack for lingering: DWD’s 1991–2020 average December temperature at Nürnberg weather station is 1.6°C. These are long-term station averages, not a forecast or a promise of snow. Wear layers, weatherproof footwear and gloves, and plan somewhere warm to sit.

Getting there from the UK

By air: Nuremberg Airport’s 20 October 2026 winter-schedule announcement confirms British Airways from London Heathrow, Ryanair from London Stansted, and easyJet connections with London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester. Check the operating days for your chosen weekend.

Airport to town: The U2 underground links the terminal with Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof in 12 minutes according to the airport. Continue into the old town on foot or use the local transport planner for your hotel.

By rail: The main station stands at the old-town entrance. From Britain this is a longer international rail trip with changes; use DB’s journey planner for the actual date rather than assuming a fixed connection.

Whole-journey planning estimate: for a direct London flight, allow around 6–7 hours from a central London starting point to an old-town hotel. This editorial estimate assumes 60–90 minutes to your UK airport, two hours before departure, Ryanair’s published 1h35 Stansted flight example, 45–60 minutes after landing, the published 12-minute U2 ride and 15–30 minutes for waiting and the final walk. Confirm the booked flight duration and airline check-in requirements; this is not a measured itinerary.

A rail alternative: plan Eurostar between London and Brussels, then DB connections via the Frankfurt area to Nürnberg. SNCF’s checked return examples use two changes, at Frankfurt Airport’s long-distance station and Brussels Midi, taking about 8½–9 hours station to station. Avoid assuming the same connection or duration in the outward direction: use DB or SNCF for your exact date, and allow extra time before the London-bound Eurostar.

Practical information

Getting there and back

From the airport: the U2 underground links the terminal with Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof in 12 minutes according to the airport. Use the VGN planner for your hotel and check current station access if you need a lift.

From the railway station: the old town begins across from Hauptbahnhof. Follow the centre towards Hauptmarkt; the hotel route links provide measured walking distances, with extra time sensible for bags and crowds.

By coach: the long-distance coach station is near Bahnhofstraße and Käte-Strobel-Straße, close to the railway station. Tour groups have special Christmas-market arrival arrangements, so follow your operator’s confirmed drop-off and return plan.

On the day

Arrive without rushing straight into the busiest aisle. Begin with the old-town walk to Hauptmarkt, browse the decorations, and make a first food stop when you are ready. Take an indoor museum or café break, then let the evening be a second, slower market visit. With another morning available, you can return for the gift you kept thinking about.

Before and after

Bring euros, a payment card and some cash. Ask your chosen stall whether it takes cards, what deposit applies to your mug and where to return it; a market-wide 2026 deposit amount is still to be confirmed. The main market closes at 2pm on Christmas Eve, and the Sister Cities and Original Regional stalls finish on 23 December.

Accessibility

Historic streets and paving deserve an unhurried plan, especially when busy. The city lists an accessible public WC at Hauptmarkt 18, on the west side of the Rathaus; check current operation before depending on it. Lorenzkirche station’s lift does not run all the way to street level, according to the city’s market access advice: check current VAG information and consider Hauptbahnhof or Weißer Turm where appropriate. Confirm any specific mobility arrangements directly before travelling.
