How we choose and check our guides

The market

Broad Street makes a wonderful starting point for a winter day in Oxford. The market settles into the heart of the city, where a browse among the wooden chalets can fit naturally around a museum visit, a bookshop stop or a walk through the surrounding streets. Leave room for discovering a gift, listening to music and choosing something delicious. Keston Events introduced the current Broad Street event in 2024, with food, gift stalls and a community stage.

Today decorated chalets and bars with seating make an inviting stop. Its own programme describes choirs, bands, solo performers and DJs, so it is worth checking the entertainment page before you settle on your visit. You need no admission ticket for the market, though individual rides and attractions may charge. Broad Street is pedestrianised apart from its cycle lane, a useful detail to remember when wandering between stalls.

Let your afternoon become an evening if you can. Browse the gift stalls while there is daylight, take an indoor break nearby, then come back as the lights take over. Mulled wine, hot chocolate and freshly cooked churros feature in the organiser’s current description, alongside street food from around the world. Food and bar hours extend beyond the retail stalls on several evenings, giving you time to sit down together after the shopping is done.

The organiser’s older trader directories describe a previous edition, so treat those as inspiration rather than a promise about this year’s chalets. The 2026 dates and visitor timetable are published separately. For a smoother visit, use the city’s Park and Ride or arrive by train, keep an eye on the weather and check the latest stage schedule. This is an outdoor event, and a warm waterproof layer helps you enjoy that last circuit rather than hurry it.

A perfect day

  1. Morning

    Find Broad Street

Arrive, drop any luggage if arranged with your hotel, then begin with the wooden stalls on Broad Street. Keep your first circuit relaxed.

  2. Late morning

    Pick out the presents

Browse the gifts and decorations while you have plenty of time to compare. Check a stallholder’s trading day before planning a return visit.

  3. Lunch

    Stay for something warm

Choose from the market food and drinks, or make a separate nearby stop at Ben’s Cookies in the Covered Market. The nearby food cards are city businesses rather than market traders.

  4. Afternoon

    Add an Oxford pause

Leave room for a city walk or a pre-booked afternoon tea at Quod, then return to Broad Street with fresh eyes and a shorter shopping list.

  5. After dark

    Enjoy a shorter second look

Finish gift shopping before the stall closing time; bars and entertainment can follow a different schedule. The market is closed on Christmas Day, so choose another date for this plan.

Practical information

Getting there and back

Oxford’s organiser recommends Park and Ride for drivers: central parking is limited. Check the current routes and fares before choosing a site. From Oxford railway station, its visitor guide describes a walk of around 15 minutes to Broad Street.

George Street and Magdalen Street West have nearby bus stops, and Gloucester Green is the central coach-station area. Check live rail or coach departures for your particular date before lingering over a final drink.
