How we choose and check our guides

The market

Gloucester Quays is a Christmas outing with room to change pace. Browse the stalls beside the historic docks, pause for something to eat, then take a little time by the water before the next shopping circuit. The markets run on seven weekends rather than every day, from 7 November to 20 December. Choose an actual Saturday or Sunday before booking your journey; a weekday visit to the outlet is a different experience.

The organiser promises more than 120 stalls each weekend, mixing wooden chalets with market pitches under festoon lights and Christmas decorations. Gifts, crafts, homewares and seasonal decorations sit alongside artisan food, street food and bars. The connection with the regular Orchard Street Market gives the event a local market rhythm, but the Christmas weekends have their own selection. Browse without a fixed shopping list and you are more likely to find the small present that feels personal.

Make the docks part of the pleasure rather than hurrying from one end of the market to the other. Daylight gives you time to look properly at the setting, while the later afternoon brings out the lights. For a longer break, the permanent Quays restaurants offer a warm seat and a separate menu; they are useful alternatives to the market food stalls, not part of a promised trader line-up. The outdoor ice rink is a separately ticketed attraction, so check its booking calendar and access guidance before adding a session. Finish your gift shopping before the market closes at 6pm on Saturday or 5pm on Sunday, and leave time for the walk back to your hotel or the station.

Christmas services and changes

On the day

Begin with a first circuit in daylight, choose lunch after looking at the menus, then give the afternoon to the gifts that catch your eye. Keep a warm indoor break in reserve and enjoy a final look at the lights before closing.

Before and after

Make this a city break with room to breathe: arrive the evening before, leave luggage at your accommodation if agreed, and save a wider city walk for the following morning. Check each attraction’s own opening and ticket arrangements.

Accessibility

The Quays publishes Blue Badge parking on every level of its car park and directs visitors to its customer-services team for help. The outdoor market spreads through the docks area; a walking estimate does not establish a step-free route or guarantee a particular surface. Confirm current accessible toilets, any mobility equipment and ice-rink access directly before travelling. No market-specific 2026 quiet session was confirmed.
