How we choose and check our guides

The market and Christmas visit

A grand garden after dark, with light and music leading you through Kew’s winter landscape. Come for the trail and build supper around it: street-food stalls, cafés and restaurants make this a complete festive evening, rather than a market-shopping trip. Choose your entrance before booking, because the best gate depends on how you travel.

The official 2026 trail is 3km and can take more than two hours, so resist squeezing it between other plans. Give the evening room to unfold: eat before entering or pause at the confirmed catering stops, wear shoes that handle wet garden paths, and let the lights set the pace. Kew operates cashless catering.

Separate market shopping from any house or trail booking. Use the official programme for individual opening days and the visitor information for the part of the estate your ticket covers.

How accommodation links work

A perfect day

  1. Before booking

    Choose the right entrance

Victoria Gate suits Kew Gardens station; Elizabeth Gate suits Kew Bridge. Only book Brentford Gate if reserving the Ferry Lane car park.

  2. Before the trail

    Make time for supper

Choose from the officially confirmed cafés, restaurants and street-food vendors. Carry a payment card: catering is cashless.

  3. Your booked slot

    Begin the illuminated walk

Follow the ticket’s gate and arrival time. The 3km trail can take more than two hours, with gradients and wet paths to consider.

  4. Along the route

    Pause for a seasonal treat

Kew’s official 2026 announcement confirms marshmallows, hot chocolate and mulled wine; individual menus and queues can vary.

  5. By closing time

Head back to Kew or Richmond

The garden closes at 10pm, or 9pm on Christmas Eve. Check the last services for your route before setting out.
